New DEA Education Requirement on Substance Use Disorders
The new, one-time requirement for DEA prescribers to complete 8 hours of education on the treatment or management of patients with opioid or substance use disorders begins June 27, 2023. Any prescriber must complete this training requirement by their next scheduled DEA registration submission. These hours can be combined across multiple education activities.

2021 Review Course in Addiction Medicine (14.75 CME)
As explained by California Medical Association, many California-licensed physicians may have already met the requirement as California already requires similar education. Also, physicians who are board certified in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry and exempt from the DEA requirements. To read more about the requirement, see the DEA guidance letter here.
