Learning Objectives
After viewing this lecture participants should be able to
- Apply the DSM 5 definition of alcohol use disorders
- Describe the epidemiology of alcohol use disorders, genetic and cultural predictors of alcoholism and of treatment response, metabolism and measures of blood alcohol content in men and women.
- Utilize pharmacologic interventions for alcohol use disorders and evidence base.
- Utilize office-based screening tools (eg cage, mast, audit, asi, ciwa…), labs for ETOH screening (if possible include copies of tools discussed in an appendix, and who they are designed for)
- Apply principles of clinical management of intoxication, withdrawal, detox
Anthony Albanese, MD
Dr. Albanese is an Affiliations Officer with the VA Office of Academic Affiliations and Clinical Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry at the UC Davis School of Medicine. He was the 2012 Review Course Chairman and is now on the CSAM Executive Council and ASAM Board of Directors. He has been practicing Addiction Medicine and Hepatology for the past 25 years in a variety of settings including methadone clinic, private practice, full service treatment facilities, academic centers and impaired professional programs.
