Learning Objectives

As a result of participating in this lecture learners should have a working knowledge of the following topics, essential to competency in addiction medicine and identify areas where more study may be needed:

  1. Evaluation of and treatment of ADHD in adolescents with substance use disorders 
  2. Epidemiology of substance use disorders in teens and young adults including prescription drug use/abuse, include in that any pertinent trends in terms of  age of onset, progression, “gateway” issues, peer or cultural-ethnic groups.
  3. Effect of age on risk for addiction of drugs of abuse
  4. Office-based screening (including a copy of tool in an appendix),
  5. Treatment needs of children and adolescents highlighting what is evidence-based from what is simply standard of care based on convention/consensus
  6. Safe prescribing practices as applied to teens and any detox or treatment issues that would be different than those for adults. 
  7. Prevention of substance use in adolescents

Seth Ammerman, M.D., FAAP, FSAHM, DABAM
Dr. Ammerman is a Clinical Professor in pediatrics and adolescent medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Ammerman is the founder and medical director of the Teen Health Van, a mobile clinic program providing comprehensive primary health care services to homeless, uninsured, and underinsured youth. Dr. Ammerman’s research interests include tobacco and substance use in adolescents; at-risk youth; eating disorders; and use of mobile technology for improving adolescent health.  He is a Fellow both of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM). He is chair of the northern California chapter of the AAP Substance Abuse Committee, and a former member of the national AAP Committee on Substance Use and Prevention (COSUP). He is a member of the medical honors society Alpha Omega Alpha. In 2012 Dr. Ammerman received a Silicon Valley Business Journal Health Care Heroes award. He also received the national AAP Founders Award in 2012 for his work in community adolescent health. In 2014 Dr. Ammerman received a Bay Area Jefferson Award for Public Service, and in 2015 received a further honor of a Jefferson Award Silver Medal. In October 2015 Dr. Ammerman became Board Certified in Addiction Medicine.
