LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Apply current evidence and expert consensus to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of substance use disorders (SUD) in diverse populations, including incarcerated individuals, women, and people experiencing homelessness.
- Evaluate emerging pharmacological treatments and protocols for MOUD, benzodiazepine tapering, methadone management, and alternatives like GLP-1s, Kratom, and long-acting injectables (e.g., Sublocade vs. Brixadi).
- Enhance advocacy and policy engagement by understanding recent legislation (e.g., SB43), regulatory boundaries, and strategies for effective systems-level change in addiction medicine.
- Integrate harm reduction strategies and compassionate overdose response techniques, including wound care for xylazine exposure and ethical considerations at end-of-life care for patients with SUD.
- Identify and manage co-occurring issues such as gambling, anabolic steroid use, cancer risk, and sexual health concerns in patients with substance use disorders.
