As a result of participating in this lecture learners should have a working knowledge of the following topics, essential to competency in addiction medicine and identify areas where more study may be needed:

  1. List the urgent, needle-related illnesses seen in untreated IDUs.
  2. Describe management phases for hepatitis and HIV-infected patients in addiction treatment.
  3. Describe screening for public health-related reportable infections seen in higher frequency in drug-addicted persons.

Paula Lum, MD
Dr. Lum is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at UCSF.  She completed her training in primary care internal medicine at San Francisco General Hospital and a fellowship at the UCSF Center for AIDS Prevention Studies.  She has been on the faculty of the HIV/AIDS Division at SFGH since 1999, teaching students and residents, conducting clinical research, and caring for patients living with HIV and substance use disorders.  Dr. Lum is board certified in Internal Medicine, a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and passed the ABAM Certification Exam in 2010.
