Course Objectives

  • Describe the key federal, state, and local laws and regulations that govern the treatment of substance use disorders,
  • -Analyze the legal implications of confidentiality and privacy laws, such as 42 CFR Part 2
  • -Identify and explain the core ethical principles (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice) as they apply to addiction medicine.
  • -Discuss the ethical dilemmas that may arise in addiction treatment such as informed consent and capacity.
  • -Outline the ethical responsibilities including the duty to provide competent care and to advocate for patients and duty to warn
  • -Examine the intersection of addiction medicine and the criminal justice system
  • Identify ethical considerations in conducting research related to addiction
  • -Explore current and emerging legal and ethical issues in addiction medicine, such as the use of telehealth
